"When I turned 16 in 1970 my first car was a 1963 Chevy 11 four door. I drove that for two years with Judy riding along the last year. I sold it in 1973 and bought a 1969 GTO. Thinking about the terrible gas mileage I was getting while working out of town, I traded that in on a 1973 Vega in 1974. Judy and I were married in 1975 and have been through a few vehicles since. A 1969 Chevelle, 1970 Nova SS were just some of the great cars we owned. I’m thinking we are up to 37 different vehicles so far."
"In October 1992 along with our daughters, we were travelling to Terrace to visit family. Just west of Smithers I saw this Chevy 11 for sale on the side of the road and had to have it. I did a quick U-turn and ended up buying it for $1,700.00. I thought we would start from the beginning."
We started the restoration in 2004. Blaine’s Autobody completed the bodywork and Bill Reesor painted it for us. We had the upholstery done by Clearview Glass. I had the 250ci engine (not original to the car) rebuilt at Valley Speed. A friend and I rebuilt the three-speed standard transmission.
Most of our restoration parts came from Gasoline Alley, Hot Rod’s and Classics, Lordco, Chieftain, Up Town Cruisers, CARS and Classic Industries.
We later upgraded the engine to a 283ci. Built by Mike Minnie in 2012
Everything is either new, re-chromed or rebuilt from the ground up, suspension, driveline, rear differential, brakes, glass, wiring harnesses, rubber seals, headlight bezels, taillights, signal lights, bumpers, emblems, mirrors, reupholstered seats, carpet, headliner, installed seatbelts. The only thing we did not replace, or re-chrome was the grille. The car was finished and on the road September 2006.
Another job offer brought us back to Prince George in July 2008. We then joined the Cruisin’ Classics Car Club. We are also members of the Kamloops Vintage Car Club of Canada and PG Overdrives. While in Kamloops, Judy was on the committee with Hot Nite in the City for two years.
We drive the car everywhere we go and are racking up the miles. Counting our collection of dash plaques, in fourteen years we have attended 67 shows, I think Judy missed two. We have put on just over 25,000 miles in our travels and attended shows in Saskatoon, Red Deer, Nelson, Kamloops, Logan Lake, Ashcroft, Merritt, Cache Creek, Penticton, Chilliwack, Minter Gardens, Langley, Qualicum Beach Parksville. Most all our local shows, Bear Lake, Vanderhoof, Burns Lake, Williams Lake, Quesnel, Wells, Dawson Creek.
We have won twelve awards which are greatly appreciated.
